My reaction in the video says it all.
This has unexpectedly taken the no. 1 spot in recent rye whiskey cocktail discoveries for me.
Diving into the history of this cocktail, back in the 1930s it was originally just rye, grapefruit, and grenadine. The recipe found in the Nomad Cocktail Book clearly took some liberties to modernize the citrus and sweetening components to brighten and refresh the final result. The spritz of peaty scotch gives a welcomed dose of smoke and salt to layer in complexity.
Absolute banger.
Ingredients
0.25oz | 7.5ml raspberry syrup
0.25oz | 7.5ml cane syrup
0.5oz | 15ml lime juice
1oz | 30ml grapefruit juice
1.5oz | 45ml rye whiskey
Cocktail Directions
Combine all ingredients into a shaker tin, shake quick hard shake with ice, strain over a large block in a rocks glass. Mist the surface with Islay Scotch, no garnish.
