the brookyln - a manhattan variation

This Manhattan variation requires an illegal substance — so let’s make one.

Calamus root, an ingredient used in the recipe for Amer Picon, a French liqueur, was labeled and banned by the FDA as a carcinogen.

While the ban remains in place since the 1960s, there are options of liqueurs and syrups that mimic its iconic profile if you’re looking to get your fix — or just smuggle it from Europe.

If you don’t want to smuggle in Amer Picon, you can substitute with an herbal but softer amaro like China-China, Ramazzotti or Cio Ciara.

Ingredients

0.25oz | 7.5ml maraschino liqueur

0.5oz | 15ml Amer Picon (or other amaro)

0.75oz | 22.5ml Blanc Vermouth

2oz | 60ml 100 proof rye whiskey

Cocktail Directions

Combine all ingredients into a stirring vessel, add ice, stir until properly chilled and diluted; strain into a chilled Nick & Nora. No garnish.
