the joy

For Joy.

It’s fair to say I’m not often looking to my DMs or comments to take suggestions to decide what cocktail recipe I want to share next.

After several tags and mentions in @_thebarre_’s video about his aunt Joy, I finally felt inspired to do so.

Joy was an editor and writer for Passport Magazine, obviously an avid traveler, and apparently a lover of a Mezcal Last Word. Considering what I’ve read about her, she was adored deeply by her family, colleagues, and (unsurprisingly) a bartender from Vancouver who named this cocktail after her.

Naming a cocktail after a loved patron is a special kind of bond — the kind reserved for best of those who sit across from us and understand how hospitality is at its best reflected as a two way street.

Additionally, McKinley who shared this recipe to honor her, told me that Joy was the one who crafted him his first cocktail, kick-starting his obsession with drinks.

Given all that, I figured I could spread some Joy too.

Ingredients

Pinch of salt

Dash of orange blossom water

0.5oz | 15ml orgeat

0.5oz | 15ml Campari

0.75oz | 22.5ml lime juice

1.5oz | 45ml mezcal

Cocktail Directions

Combine all ingredients into a shaker tin, add ice, shake, and double strain into a chilled coupe glass. No garnish. No fuss. Just joy.
