the best amaretto sour recipe

by jeffrey mogenthaler

I’ve honestly put this recipe off for far too long, but I’ve been recently inundated with requests in my DMs for it that it could longer be ignored.

Here’s the thing. There is no better recipe for this cocktail than Jeffrey Morgenthaler’s — and he f***ing knows it.

He took an overly sweet, nearly laughable cocktail in the craft bartending community and made it iconic. Frankly, that’s what he does.

Literally whenever someone makes an outdated classic immeasurably better in every way, you just “Morgenthaler’d” the f*** out of it.

Enough ego stroking. I think this recipe could use a pinch of salt — just saying. Boom, mixology.

Ingredients

1 egg white

1 tsp | 5ml demerara syrup

1 oz | 30ml lemon juice

0.75oz | 22.5ml cask strength bourbon of choice

1.5oz | 45ml amaretto (I used Lazzaroni)

Cocktail Directions

Combine syrup, lemon juice and spirits into a tin. In a separate tin, add 1 egg white (Jeff specifically uses 0.5oz | 15ml of egg white, gently whisked if you’d like to follow his spec down to a t).

Combine the cocktail with the egg white and dry shake. Add ice, shake again; double strain into a chilled coupe or small rocks glass.

Garnish with a few drops of angostura bitters, make it look fancy.
