three easy highball cocktails & tips for making the best highballs

To me, there is an art to a proper highball. While the recipes I show are easy, it’s the tips that look at particular details that can bring them from good to great.

Perfect highball tip #1: everything should be cold

Get every ingredient as chilly as possible. Your mixer, of course, but also your spirits and your glass. Carbonation performs its best in a cold environment — meaning, your drink will be brighter and the bubbles will be more impactful the colder everything is to start.

Making the best highball tip #2: perfect your ratios

Ideally for a highball, you’re looking for 2 parts mixer to one part spirit. You want the bubbles to actually shine through (too little, and your dink will taste like slightly-watered down booze instead of a refreshing and bubbly cocktail). The correct ratio also provides balance to the alcohol content of the spirits.

Highball cocktail tip #3: use a high-quality mixer

Among the most important are the quality of the mixer you use. Use a premium mixer. I like Q MIXERS. They have two major advantages compared to other store bought brands in two ways:

1.) they are carbonated at a higher level, specifically produced to be matched in a cocktail without compromising on bubble quality and intensity

2.) they have a lower sugar content, sweetened naturally with agave, to provide a canvas better suited to allow the spirits they are paired with to shine their best.
