hack

As this is a riff on a Sidecar, the name comes from the nickname given to a sidecar from Hackney, London: where it was the birthplace of a particular breed of horse that was used to give rides in the metropolitan using carriages areas during the 17th century.

The citrus season is in full swing, so I wanted to tap into the incredible produce by swapping out the usual Sidecar components for gin, bergamot liqueur, earl grey, and adding some vibrant grapefruit.

This combination was insane, and an absolute banger for my first recipe of 2024.

Ingredients

0.25oz | 7.5ml earl grey tea syrup

0.5oz | 15ml lemon juice

1oz | 30ml grapefruit juice

0.75oz | 22.5ml Italicus

1.5oz | 45ml gin of choice

Directions

Make earl grey tea syrup (recipe below). Combine all ingredients into a shaker tin, add ice, shake and double strain into a chilled coupe. Garnish with a trimmed and expressed grapefruit peel.
